Think Your Mind is on Idle When You're Resting? Think Again!

A fortuitous observation by Marcus Raichle, a professor of radiology, neurology, neurobiology and biomedical engineering at Washington University in St. Louis led to the discovery that the resting (but awake) mind is nowhere near as idle as it was assumed to be. After wiring up his subjects, he told them to rest quietly but not fall asleep before he started the test. What he observed before his intended test surprised him. He saw a substantial amount of brain activity in a very distinctive pattern. That chance observation has opened the door to a whole new understanding about the brain's functions -- and earned the Raichle Kavli Prize, awarded by The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.
